the rest of the story...

The picture above is of one of my friends at the adult daycare center that I work with. It is amazing to see these seniors come to life when they start to use skills they had long ago abandoned. We are making a quilt to hang on the wall. It was a little like "Awakenings" when the patients came alive. Most of our people are in wheelchairs but suddenly around fabric and needles and thread many came out of their naps and started to create. One cute lady had a stroke and lost use of her right hand. Together we worked on her square and she was awesome with that left hand. Soon she didn't need me! Many of the ladies shared memories of things they had made for children and grandchildren. It was a humbling and sweet experience.

Working for Special Populations has taught me many things. Here are a few; 1- no matter what you lose, many things thought to be lost are still inside of you. 2- We all feel better when we have something concrete to show for our effort. 3- People who when young were angry and had few friends are old people who are angry and have few friends, 4- Everyone had an interesting story to tell about their lives. and so on. Thank you to my friends at Metro Better Living Cetner who make me more joyful, more grateful and less sorry for my losses. Today we did devotion and sang a lot of the songs I haven't done since Mr. Millers choir in Jr. High. We sang "Reach out and touch" "The Sparrow" " Jeremiah was a Bullfrong". "Wade in the water" and said the lord's prayer. I left Metro batter living Center with my well more full and my problems lighter.
